Speed is a feature. Amazon famously discovered that every 100ms of latency cost them 1% in sales. Yet, when integrating third-party APIs, developers often blindly proxy requests through their primary US-East server, forcing global users into a horrible transatlantic ping-pong match.
The Round-Trip Problem
Imagine a user in Tokyo opening your app. The request travels to your server in Virginia (150ms), your server requests data from an API hosted in California (70ms), California replies to Virginia (70ms), and Virginia replies to Tokyo (150ms). That's nearly a half-second of pure network travel time before any processing even begins.
Moving to the Edge
The solution is Edge Computing. Discarding the monolithic central server for a globally distributed CDN-like architecture for compute logic. By running API validations, token checks, and caching at Edge Nodes (like Vercel Edge Functions or Cloudflare Workers) located specifically in Tokyo, Frankfurt, or Sydney, you drastically cut down the initial hop.

Conclusion
Edge placement can shorten the path to your own gateway, but provider location, TLS setup, network conditions, and upstream processing still shape end-to-end latency. API Key Health does not currently proxy application traffic or guarantee a fixed latency overhead; its current scope is encrypted credential storage, provider validation, health monitoring, and alerts.
